Gyeongbuk Province recently held a seminar bringing together local agri-tech researchers and industry professionals to dive into the future of vertical farming—a fast-growing field in smart agriculture.
The event featured case studies, technology trends, and insights into how vertical farms could increase productivity and income for farmers.
Leading the discussion, Yoon Young-Beom, CEO of Growise, shared real-world examples of vertical farms he’s helped design and build in Korea and overseas. His presentation covered practical tips on facility setup, system integration, and climate control—sparking strong interest from attendees.
Professor Oh Myung-Min from Chungbuk National University followed with a forward-looking talk on where vertical farming is headed, and why it’s likely to play a key role in sustainable food production moving forward. He also highlighted the broader social and economic value this technology could bring to the future of Korean agriculture.
Participants got the chance to learn about the basics of vertical farming—from how it's built to how it improves yields—and engaged in open discussions throughout the seminar.
Gyeongbuk officials shared that a brand-new vertical farm facility at the Gumi Smart Agriculture Research Center is set to be completed later this year. Once it opens, it will serve as a hub for testing and advancing smart farming technologies.
This seminar is part of Gyeongbuk’s broader effort to modernize agriculture in response to growing challenges like climate change, labor shortages, and an aging population. In 2023, the province launched a Smart Agriculture Research Group focused on areas like smart farm ICT, AI, robotics, and plant factories—and they’re moving fast to apply those solutions in the real world.
